Thanks to all of the volunteers who came out for AAAYA’s Yale Day of Service events on May 15, 2010! A recap of the day’s events are below. Special thanks to Azan Kung who produced the video of the Los Angeles Day of Service.

Southern California

The 2nd annual Yale Day of Service for Southern California AAAYA took place at the Little Tokyo Childrens Festival. A group of devoted Yalies helped out with the San Tai San – 3 on 3 basketball tournament; those who understood the rules of the game kept score, and those who didn’t cheered for the teams! We also did some P.R. for the new Budokan Recreation Center – an exciting new facility that will transform and revitalize the downtown landscape of Little Tokyo. Laughter, conversation, and friendship made it a perfect day for service. Thanks to all who participated.

Chicago

AAAYA Chicago partnered with the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce to “Keep Chinatown Beautiful.” Volunteers helped clean, paint, pick up trash, and plant flowers in this bustling ethnic neighborhood.

New York

We had a beautiful sunny day for our activities at P.S. 124, the Yung Wing Elementary School in New York City’s Chinatown. The school, which will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary next year, enrolls children from pre-K through Grade 5. This is the AAAYA-New York Chapter’s third visit to the School since the 2009 Yale Day of Service, under the direction of NY Chapter president, Rocky Chin, M.C.P ’71, and Yung Wing’s principal, Alice Hom. We spent our time cleaning up the garden and window boxes, planting flowers and vegetables, painting a mural, prepping teaching kits and organizing the library.

Many, many thanks to Dee Hamaguchi, BA ‘87, dean at Brooklyn Technical High School, who sent an amazing contingent of students who worked on every project! Thank you Brooklyn Tech students! Dee also led another Day of Service event at the Riverkeep Oyster Restoration Project in Sandy Hook, NJ.

Thank you to: Jai Chandrasekhar, JD ’97, Jeff Chen, BA ’96, Tonny Ho, BA ’76, Trish Takemoto, BA ’76, Ting Wong, JD ’05, Deborah White, BA ’76, Miriam Widmann, BA ’85, and her daughter and friends, Jonathan Akeley, MA ’03, Stephen Brandes, BA ’09, Matthew Brimer BA ’09, Michael Duddy, M.Arch ’85 and his daughter, July Lee, BA ’85 and her Mom and Dad, Mark Lee, BA ’04, Manny Marshack, BA ’12 and his Mom Beverly, Marisa Reisman, BA ’09, Anne Xu, BA ’09, Zheren Yang, BS ’07, Kunduck Moon, BA ’85, and Gene Wang, Ph.D. ‘99 and his family.

Thank you to all the volunteers! Without you, the Yale Day of Service at the Yung Wing School, would not have been successful!!
