A SATIRICAL SELF-PORTRAIT
By David Henry Hwang ’83 MFA Starring: Pun Bandhu ’01 MFA as D.H.H. & Francis Jue ’86 as D.H.H.’s father
A revealing backstage comedy from the Tony Award-winning author of M Butterfly, this ferociously funny, utterly unreliable memoir chronicles David Henry Hwang’s struggle to define racial identity in the mixed-up melting pot of contemporary America. Part fact, part fiction, provocative yet full of heart, this Obie Award winner is a tale of cultural politics, family fortunes, and artistic integrity. Actor and Tony-winning producer Pun Bandhu plays D.H.H. Broadway star Francis Jue recreates his award-winning role as D.H.H.’s father.
Dinner: For those who would like to get together before the performance, we will meet for dinner at the New Mongolian BBQ at 304 Castro Street in Mountain View beginning at 6 pm. Service is buffet style, so people can arrive at different times.
Private Post-Play Discussion with Yale Cast & Playwright:
After the show both Francis Jue and Pun Bandhu have graciously agreed to participate in a private post-performance discussion of the play for Yale Alumni only. David Henry Hwang may also be able to join us for a unique opportunity to discuss “drama” in all its forms with some of the leading Asian writers and actors of our generation.
David Henry Hwang, Yale School of Drama ’83 and author of the Tony award-winning “M. Butterfly” and the recent revival of “Flower Drum Song” reflects upon his experiences as an Asian American with on-stage drama as a professional career and off-stage drama dealing with parental expectations (and don’t we all know what the inescapable cry of “aaaya” means under those circumstances).
Francis Jue (Yale, ’86) plays the father and starred in TheaterWorks’ previous production of M. Butterfly (taking over for B.D. Wong). Francis won an Obie in 2008 for this role in Yellow Face. Pun Bandhu (Yale School of Drama, ’01) plays the son.
