About the Event
AAAYA NorCal invites you to a day at the Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco Bay. Come join your fellow alumni and their families on the beautiful island and take a tour of the National Historic Landmark through which hundreds of thousands of immigrants from across the Pacific, including from China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and India, passed through between 1910 and 1940. You will also see the new Angel Island Immigration Museum which tells the west coast immigration story before, during, and after the Angel Island period, up until the current day.
We will be led by Grant Din '79, volunteer, consultant, and former staff member with the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, who co-curated an exhibit about the Japanese immigrants who were detained on the island as so-called "enemy aliens" during World War II. Grant also organizes the annual cleanup at the immigration station which is part of Yale's annual Global Day of Service. Bring a picnic lunch and water, wear layers in case of fog and sun, and be prepared to have a good time and learn about Asian American history!
We will be taking the 10:15 a.m. ferry from San Francisco's Ferry Building that arrives on the island at 10:45 (use your Clipper Card or come a bit early and buy a ticket; returns are at 1:20, 3:20, and 4:45); details here, or the 10 a.m. from Tiburon which arrives at 10:20 (buy roundtrip tickets here; returns are at 20 minutes after the hour until 4:20). We will meet at the docks and take the one-mile walk to the immigration station which starts with over 100 steps up a hill. If you'd rather take a shuttle, they cost $12 round trip leave at 10:30 from near the docks (for some reason that's too early for the SF ferry arrival). We'll meet at the bell by the water at around 11:15 a.m. for the tour.
The tour cost is $7 for adults and $5 for ages 5-17; younger kids are free.
Hope to see you there!
