Join YaleChicago, AAAYA Chicago, YaleChicago Performing Arts, and YaleWomen at the Goodman Theatre on Sunday, September 28 for a matinee performance of the world premiere play The World of Extreme Happiness. Celebrating the perseverance of the human spirit, The World of Extreme Happiness chronicles the journey of Sunny, a young factory worker who struggles to gain control over her life amid China’s modern economic transformation.
This bracing, poignant, and surprisingly funny play by acclaimed playwright Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig (hailed as “hard-hitting and bruisingly funny” by Time Out London) will be followed by a provocative panel discussion illuminating themes from the play and produced in partnership with the Goodman Theatre. The panel features production co-stars and Yale alumni Francis Jue ’85 and Jennifer Lim, YSD, in conversation with Chay Yew, artistic director of the acclaimed Victory Gardens Theater. More about Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig and The World of Extreme Happiness
“There aren’t many plays written for Asian/Asian-American actors, and few feature complex female characters. I was interested in writing about the world’s largest internal migration—rural Chinese peasants flooding the cities in search of better opportunities—through the lens of a young, ambitious Chinese woman,” said Cowhig (author of “The World of Extreme Happiness”)
