Life After Yale: Careers – A Candid View

The Legal Profession

This event is the first in a series covering different professions and will feature three panelists representing the respective disciplines of outside litigation, general counsel, and outside corporate finance/M&A. This series is jointly supported by the Association of Asian American Yale Alumni (AAAYA), the Yale Alumni Association of New York (YAANY) and Yale University. The remainder of the series will cover investment banking (April 23), consulting, medical and entrepreneurship.

The panel discussion will be held in New York City, but will be simultaneously broadcast via video conference to Room 119, William Harkness Hall at Yale University at 100 Wall Street, and over the internet as a webinar.

Biographies:

Bijan Amini is an Officer and co-founding principal of the firm. Mr. Amini specializes in litigating complex commercial disputes, both in the civil and bankruptcy contexts, and negotiating transactions. He has litigated cases in both federal and state courts nationwide, as well as various arbitral tribunals nationally and internationally, including the American Arbitration Association, JAMS, the ICC and FINRA.

Sandra Leung is the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, a global biopharmaceutical company.  She leads the worldwide Law Department and is responsible for a wide range of legal and regulatory areas including intellectual property, regulatory law, litigation, environmental, health & safety, corporate security and transactions including licensing, acquisitions and divestitures.  She serves as the primary legal advisor to Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Board of Directors.

Alice Young heads Kaye Scholer’s Asia-Pacific practice, advising multinationals and entrepreneurs on their business activities and investment considerations in the United States and throughout Asia. In addition to advising clients on complex cross-border transactions and sensitive legal and governmental strategies, she assists clients in identifying potential Asian partners and resources. With more than 35 years’ experience, Young has served as lead legal advisor on projects in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Malaysia and the Philippines. She worked in Hong Kong in the early 1970s and completed her first deal in mainland China in 1979. Currently based in New York and Shanghai, Young speaks Mandarin, Japanese and French. Young was in the first class of women to graduate from Yale University, and subsequently received her law degree from Harvard Law School.

Peter Young (Moderator) is President and Managing Director of Young & Partners, a leading investment banking firm that serves the chemical and life sciences industries. He manages the firm and is also actively involved in client transactions and financings. 

Young & Partners was founded in 1996. Prior to 1996, Mr. Young ran various related industry groups at Salomon Brothers, Schroders, and Lehman Brothers.

Mr. Young received an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School (Baker Scholar with Highest Distinction), an M.S. in Accounting from New York University and a B.A. in Economics from Yale University.
