AAAYA NorCal is reserving a block of ONLY 20 tickets for David Henry Hwang’s ground-breaking play FOB being staged at Stanford by the Asian American Theater Project. David Henry Hwang (Yale ’83 MFA) is the only Asian American playwright ever to win a Tony (M. Butterfly) and has won numerous awards, including the 1980-1981 Obie Award for Best New Play with FOB.
FOB explores issues of race and cultural identity as both “FOBs” (immigrants Fresh Off the Boat) and “ABCs” (assimilated American Born Chinese) struggle to define themselves and claim their role in the American Dream. Over 30 years ago, David Henry Hwang blasted through the “model minority” stereotypes with this raunchy, rough, rap-filled, insider-look at what it really means to be Asian in America. Revisiting these issues offers another generation the opportunity to define themselves on their own terms.
Tickets for the Feb. 20th performance at 3pm and special panel discussion afterward with David and other original cast members are available on a first-come-first-serve basis for $10 to members of the Association of Asian American Yale Alumni and the Yale Club of Silicon Valley.
If you attended DHH’s Yellow Face TheatreWorks performance with Yale alumni Francis Jue and Pun Bandhu, you won’t want to miss this re-staging of this seminal work in Asian American theater and the exciting discussion with David afterward.
