Saturday, May 16, 2009

30 Volunteers are needed for each shift: Morning Shift: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  (check in at 8:30 a.m.) Afternoon Shift: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (check in at 12:30 p.m.)

Volunteers are needed to plant a flower and vegetable garden, organize the school’s library, organize the book room and storage closets, help prepare materials for classroom activities (i.e. cutting plastic bottles for terrariums, collating booklets for writing), and make learning center/group activities (cutting, sorting, bagging, labeling).  The school has also graciously agreed to provide breakfast and lunch for morning shift volunteers.  This site can accommodate up to 30 volunteers per shift.  Young adults ages 13 and up are welcomed.

Volunteers are also invited to attend a 60-minute walking tour of Chinatown followed by dinner at a restaurant in Chinatown (no-host).  Volunteers should assemble at 5PM in Chatham Square, adjacent to the Yung Wing School.

About the Yung Wing School: Located in the heart of Chinatown, the Yung Wing School serves over 950 students from pre-K through 5th grade.  P.S. 124 is named after the first Chinese student in America, Yung Wing, who came to the US when he was 18 years old to attend high school. He was the first Chinese person to attend Yale University, and the first Asian to receive an US Bachelor’s degree. He graduated in 1853. Yung Wing went back to China and, with the permission of the Chinese government, brought more students back to the USA to study.
